The wide, shallow bowl of this compote was made for something beautiful- low-cut garden blooms, a light, frothy dessert or a special beverage. The bowl is clear glass, etched around the rim with a continuous band of scrolling foliate motifs, and it rests in a sterling silver collar detailed with a pierced openwork band and beaded border before dropping into a weighted pedestal foot. The piece is stamped "STERLING / PAT NO 1,985,956" on the base, dating it to approximately 1934 and placing it firmly in the Art Deco era, when even everyday objects were expected to be elegant. Set of 4.
