Antique French Blue Opaline Egg on Gilt Stand

A sky blue antique opaline translucent glass egg cradled in an ornate gilt wire basket stand worked as a sheaf of wheat, with leaves, buds, and a small flower at the crown. A collar rings the center of the egg and allows the hand-fitted brass hinge and clasp to open and close with ease. The satiny blue glass and fine gilt openwork make it a romantic shelf or vanity piece. Circa 1850-1880, Napoleon III.
